I like staying in unique accommodations and when I heard about a shipping container hotel in Texas, I knew I just had to check it out! Here’s a recap of my stay at the FlopHouze Shipping Container Hotel in Round Top, TX.
How to Book:
FlopHouze has their own website that you can book from (www.flophouze.com) along with other third party sites such as Airbnb and Hotels.com. I did the math and decided to book directly with FlopHouze on their own website. There were only two of us going and we booked Houze 2 because it came with two full beds. I received our hotel confirmation by email and received a follow-up email with check-in instructions two days prior to arrival.
Getting There:
FlopHouze Shipping Container Hotel is located in Round Top, TX (not to be confused with another popular city with a similar name, Round Rock). It is about 3.5-4 hours drive from me in Dallas, therefore, it was a no-brainer for us to road trip out there. If you’re flying in, it’s best to fly into the Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), get a rental car, and make the 1-hour drive out to FlopHouze. The rental car will come in handy so you can drive around town to check out the local shops and restaurants.
Our Stay in Houze 2:
The property is able to accommodate all types of stay with the 6 shipping containers that have a combination of king bed, full beds, and bunk beds. Each container is uniquely decorated inside, and you can even purchase the furniture and art that’s in them. August in Texas gets hot and the AC units in the container did a superb job keeping us cool.
Each container has their own deck, firepit with chairs, and hammock. Firewood and lighter fuel is included, and is placed in a bin under the deck. During our visit in August, it was really dry in the area so the county had a fire ban and we weren’t able use the fire pit.
Living area included a pull-out couch, record player, and board games. If you’re looking to catch up on your shows, make sure you bring your laptop or other devices. There are no TV’s in the container, however, FlopHouze supplies Wi-Fi for its guests and you can stream whatever you want on your devices after enjoying everything Round Top has to offer.
The kitchenette was great and had everything we needed including utensils, microwave, mini-fridge, supplies for fresh brewed coffee, and trash bin. I didn’t know how to use a Chemex, so I brought my own French press to make coffee. The unit had these cute coffee mugs with atlas designs on them. Looking back, I wish I had bought them to add to my love of travel collection.
The bathroom was incredibly clean and included hairdryer, towels, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and eucalyptus shower spray. I had never used a shower spray before visiting FlopHouze and can honestly say it was a spa-like experience. I enjoyed that shower spray so much that I had to purchase a bottle before leaving.
After my relaxing shower, I had such a great nights rest thanks to the comfortable beds in the container. The FlopHouze isn’t just for summer, the beds were outfitted with thick comforters making this a great winter weekend getaway also.
Amenities:
Don’t forget to pack your sunscreen and swimsuit! The container pool is definitely a popular place to chill. Guests can take a break from the summer heat while unwinding in the pool with their favorite beverage. I was lucky enough to have it all to myself during the day time. It did get crowded towards the end of the day with other guests and families using the pool. I would recommend packing your own pool towels as they are not included in the units or at the pool.
What I Loved:
I absolutely loved star gazing while laying in the hammock and lounging in the chair on our personal deck. Second favorite are the sunsets and you shouldn’t miss them. The evening weather in August was almost perfect with a cool breeze and just a smidge of humidity. The quiet and seclusion was just what we needed for a relaxed trip; a perfect place to social distance. For two city gals, we definitely had fun watching the cows and horses graze around the property. We joked and said it was a country side safari right on our deck!
Other Notes:
- If you need a bigger space for a larger group, FlopHouze also has 2 traditional houses (that are also amazingly decorated) not too far off the property that you can book.
- They have a showroom/store on property and you should pop in there, take a look around, and say hi to the owner if you have some time.
- There is a 2 night minimum and it’s definitely worth spending that much time or more.
- There is a cleaning fee that is added onto your booking and you’ll see it itemized in the booking receipt.
- Warning: there will be some cow poop around the property, so make sure you watch where you step!
- If you decide to spend some time in Round Top, I would recommend visiting the shops at Henkel Square Market and Junk Gypsy Company.
